Based on a true story, this picture book reads like a fairy tale. When a poor devout widow begs a scrap of bread from a faithless baker, she offers to attend the king's wedding Mass as payment. The baker writes "One Mass" on a scrap of paper and sets it on his scale to prove how little it is worth — only to find that nothing in his shop, not even the gigantic royal wedding cake, can outweigh it.
Luminous old-world watercolor paintings and gold foil artwork lend solemnity and beauty to the story. A Catholic Press Association Award winner, recommended for ages K–4.
